Shiraz: The City of Poetry

Shiraz has been known as the epicenter of Persian civilization for over 2000 years. The name of this city has been registered in history books as "Tirazis", "Shirazis" and "Shiraz". Shiraz, the city of poets, literature, and flowers is the capital of the central-southern province of Fars and is regarded as the city of great poets, led by the major poets Hafez and Saadi, who even Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once adored. Today, their graceful mausoleums, the tomb of Hafez, and the tomb of Saadi, splendid and extensive attract legions of Persian visitors. Dominant industries in the city include the production of cement, sugar, fertilizers, textile products, wood products, metalwork, and rugs.

The ancient city of Shiraz has some of the first Persian gardens and is a unique example of the hospitality and warmth of its people. Many historical and ancient attractions and old cities of the Persian Empire are placed in this city, showing the glory of a nation such as Persepolis Necropolis, and Pasargadae.

If you visit Shiraz in the spring, when the fragrance of flowers, especially orange tree blossoms has filled up the air, you’ll feel the highlights of this cultural city. There’s also a visitable 3-story pavilion in the center of Eram Garden, a botanical Persian garden replete with palm trees, red roses, and flowing water. Also, Shāh Chérāgh is a funerary monument and mosque in Shiraz, which attracts many pilgrims yearly.

Even if the name of the city suggests otherwise, Shiraz is not a city full of delicious red wine, because just like anywhere else in Iran, alcohol is strictly prohibited. For over a thousand years, Shiraz has been a regional trade center. It is one of the oldest cities in ancient Iran.

About the Climate of Shiraz
